Ever thought you could make a working mini fan out of old plastic bottles? Sounds surprising, right? But with a few simple steps, you and your child can create a cute little fan that actually blows air! This DIY project is not only fun but also teaches kids about recycling and how things work.

Let’s get crafting and turn those empty bottles into a cool, spinning fan. It’s a perfect way to spend quality time together while making something useful and creative.
📝 Materials You’ll Need:
- 2 empty plastic bottles
- A pair of scissors (or a cutter — adults should assist)
- A bamboo stick or skewer
- A strong piece of string
- Tape (optional for extra support)
- A marker and stickers (for decoration)
🛠️ Step-by-Step Instructions
(Watch the full instructions in the video here)

Step 1: Make the Fan Blades
- Cut off the top part of the first bottle (about 1/3 from the top).
- Slice it into 6 equal strips to create “fan blades.”
- Round off the sharp edges with scissors to make them safe.
- Gently bend each blade outward like flower petals.
Step 2: Prepare the Fan Base
- Take the second bottle and poke two small holes in its cap (adults should assist here).
- Remove the small plastic ring (from under the bottle cap) and tie a piece of string to it.
- Slide a bamboo stick through the cap holes so it can spin freely.
Step 3: Assemble the Mechanism
- Thread the string and bamboo stick through the bottle from the top opening.
- Tie the string securely inside so it doesn’t slip.
- Attach the fan blade part (from Step 1) onto the end of the bamboo stick.
- Tighten everything and test if it spins smoothly.
Step 4: Make It Spin!
- Close the bottle cap to hold the stick in place.
- Hold the bottle, spin the stick to wind up the string.
- Pull the string quickly and watch the fan blades whirl and blow air!
Creative Decoration Ideas:
- Let your child color the bottle or add cute stickers.
- Make themed fans (like superhero logos, flowers, or animal faces).
- Use colorful string or washi tape to personalize their fan.
🎨 Add Your Personal Touch
Let your kids get creative by decorating their fan. Use stickers, markers, or washi tape to make it uniquely theirs. You can turn it into a flower fan, superhero fan, or even add googly eyes for fun!
🧠 What Kids Will Learn
This isn’t just a fun activity. Kids will:
- Learn about recycling and reusing materials.
- Understand simple mechanics like rotation and tension.
- Improve their fine motor skills through cutting, threading, and assembling.
- Boost creativity by personalizing their own fan design.
This project is simple enough for young kids (with some adult help) and fun enough for older children to enjoy on their own. It’s a lovely way to spend time together, away from screens, while building something cool and practical.
