Craft & Clean Together: DIY Mini Trash Can from Paper Cups

Who knew a simple paper cup could turn into the cutest mini trash can? This little project is not just fun to make but also a creative way to keep your desk tidy. Perfect for parents and kids to craft together, this paper cup trash can is super easy, uses materials you already have at home, and will definitely bring a smile to your child’s face.

Let’s get crafting!

What You’ll Need:

  • 2 paper cups
  • A small piece of thin cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Tape or glue
  • A small plastic bag
  • Markers, stickers, washi tape for decoration (optional)

Step-by-Step Instructions:

(Watch the full instructions in the video here)

Step 1: Make a Hole in the Paper Cup

Start by taking one paper cup and carefully poking a small hole in the bottom. This will be part of the lid mechanism later. Don’t worry if the hole isn’t perfect because this craft is all about having fun!

Step 2: Create the Springboard Lid

Grab a piece of cardboard and draw a shape like a smiley mouth (just like in the video). Cut it out and place it inside the paper cup, pressing it down. You’ll notice it bounces back up a little. That’s exactly what we want! This springboard will help the lid pop open.

Step 3: Shape the Trash Can Body

Trim the top edge of the paper cup if needed to make it neat. You can also use leftover pieces from another paper cup to tidy it up.

Step 4: Make the Lid

Take another piece of cardboard and draw a circle for the trash can lid. Cut it out and tape it onto the top of the cup, leaving a small flap or section loose so it can lift up easily. For extra fun, you can add a tiny switch underneath. When you flick it, the lid will pop open!

Step 5: Add a Mini Trash Bag

Place a small plastic bag inside the cup and fold the edges over neatly. This little touch makes it look like a real trash bin and keeps things clean when tossing in tiny scraps.

Decorate

This is where your child’s creativity shines! Let them draw cute faces, add stickers, or wrap the cup with colorful washi tape. You can make a funny monster trash can, a tiny robot helper, or even a kawaii-style smiley bin. There are no limits!

Why Kids Will Love This Craft

This activity isn’t just about making a cute item. It’s also a sneaky way to encourage tidiness and responsibility. Kids will be eager to use their mini trash can to keep their desk clean. Plus, the springy lid is so satisfying to flick open!

Parents, get involved! You can handle the cutting parts while your kids focus on decorating. This craft is a perfect way to spend screen-free time together and teach simple recycling lessons using everyday materials.
